The class of 1940 - a cohort that did not consciously experience the war, but certainly suffered from it and its consequences. Many of us still carry the trauma of the bombings with us today. At the same time, we also remember the kind, helpful US soldiers with their chocolate and gum packages, the CARE packages, the friendships with refugee children, the neighborhood support, the collective rolling up of sleeves, and a spirit of optimism that had never been seen in our country before.
