Being born in 1945 means having come into the world during the last days of the war or in the chaos that followed. Germany lay in ruins, and people had to start all over again. We, the post-war children, were content with little and made the most of what we had. Our memories range from playing in the rubble to pioneer afternoons, from pranks with the neighborhood kids to secretly listening to Western music. Being a child in post-war Germany was not always easy, but it was almost always beautiful.
