Greece has been in an economic depression for years. It wasn't always this way; people know that their situation could be better. The stories of Christos Ikonomou are set in Piraeus, around the large port. They make the atmosphere in the country palpable today, depicting people who struggle with various existential needs and attempt to take control of their lives in some way, even if it means just waiting. Ikonomou understands the lives of his fellow countrymen, knows their world, the streets and the docks that form their home, those corners of Athens that are actually gray yet possess a unique beauty. His characters live in tenements and work at the port. In snapshots, we see these individuals in their dignity and empathize with them: the retirees camping out for social security, the workers waiting in vain for their weekly wages.
