Since her mother left, Pauli and her sister Karine have been on their own. Pauli is sixteen and, as the older sister, is trying to maintain a normal daily routine. However, the supplies that their mother canned before her disappearance are running low, and even though it is not yet November, the look at the sky does not promise anything good. After the last residents have left the village and the moon casts an ominous pale green light over the landscape, the distant hills draw Pauli in like a magnet. For beyond them lies the unknown, which has swallowed everyone - first their father and later Powel, the big boy with the strange face, her only confidant. In search of an explanation, Pauli's thoughts wander into the past, and fateful stories come to light. Pauli realizes: she must take action before the first snow falls.
