Mountains, rubble, gravel, a bit of grass: Anyone looking at Switzerland three hundred years ago would probably never have thought that this very country would one day develop into one of the richest in the world. Yet, upon closer inspection, the rise was not so coincidental: The country was located in the Alps, but also in the heart of Europe, close to major markets, at important passes between North and South, and connected to the world by rivers. The unique political development that the Confederation underwent since the late Middle Ages also played a role. This curious, anarchic, always decentralized republic, a rarity in Europe, seemed both outdated and modern at the same time. Entrepreneurs, immigrants, and dreamers found opportunities here that were denied to them elsewhere. Not because the Swiss knew better, but because they had no other choice. No strong monarch dictated terms; instead, weak cantons spurred each other on.
