"It's terrible to see how history is being made." Since the summer of 2014, Serhij Zhadan has been documenting his experiences during his travels to the war-torn regions of eastern Ukraine. These are lyrical snapshots that abruptly reveal the essential truths, brief stories about people who suddenly find themselves on two opposing sides or no longer know where they belong and what will become of them. A few stanzas convey something of the tragedy faced by millions of individuals. In the laconic verses, the influence of Brecht is palpable, whose poetry Zhadan has been translating since the Ukrainian revolution.
