The choir of believing citizens speaks. But hardly has one begun to talk when another interrupts. The choir cannot find a common language, yet it is a choir that knows an audience: the non-believers. Globalization, migration, and the simultaneous loss of religious ties have turned our cities into places of diversity, religious megacities. But what do people believe? Do they think their faith is a private matter? Do they believe their faith is political? Do they believe in the freedom of dissenters, in a better world? How do they influence the social and political life of the city? What expectations do the believers have of democracy and the rule of law?
