Although obstetrics has a long research tradition and highly developed medical technology, certain situations remain inexplicable. On the other hand, midwives perceive things in the care of pregnant women, birthing individuals, and new mothers that are not captured by measuring devices. Based on Hermann Schmitz's phenomenology of the body, the author develops a theoretical foundation for the sensing and bodily communication between the birthing person and the midwife. This approach opens up a new perspective for the actions of midwives. Obstetric phenomena can thus be represented and justified. The unique language of midwifery practice becomes visible.
