What comes after death? Modern people ask this question just as often as the ancient Egyptians did. They would like to hear a clear answer to their question. Esotericism and the vague world of near-death experiences attempt to provide answers that sometimes align with Christian statements. In this context, it is often forgotten what the Bible and the Church, namely Judaism and Christianity, say about this topic, not least from the experience of death over three thousand years of pastoral care and liturgy. For if the Church is competent in any area, it is in dealing with dying. The Heidelberg New Testament scholar Klaus Berger outlines clear lines of Christian responses to the question of what death means in light of the triune God.
