Anyone who spends a few days visiting some of the urban daycare centers and nurseries in the northern Italian city of Reggio Emilia, talking to educators and parents, will gain entirely new ideas about what a kindergarten or nursery can be – and what children are capable of when their abilities are purposefully and comprehensively stimulated. In Reggio, each daycare center is a small city in itself, with a piazza in the middle around which, separated by bright glass walls, are grouped ateliers, workshops, stages, movement rooms, and thinking corners of various sizes. In Reggio, there is primarily material and tools: wire, clay, wood, dough, colors, and paper of all kinds, along with screws, files, saws, brushes, scissors, basically everything a child might need to express themselves. Because, as the Reggio educators believe, children do not just have one language; they have a hundred languages in which they can express themselves.
