So far, no educational standards for the subject of music have been established in Germany. Consequently, empirically validated competency models, which could serve as a foundation, are lacking. This volume therefore empirically validates a theoretical competency model for the subfield "Perceiving and Contextualizing Music" based on a sample of 1,449 sixth-grade students using a computer-based test. Using item response theory methods, the quality of the developed items is examined based on psychometric and content-related criteria. A comparison of various one-dimensional and multidimensional models for testing the model structure shows that the theoretically assumed four-dimensional structure of the competency model can be validated. The four dimensions include auditory perception and musical memory.
