Product details

Berlin in the 1920s: Music resonates in a multitude of bars, pubs, cabarets, cafés, and theaters. It is embedded in specific narrative contexts and relates to the spaces in which it is heard. People emerge here as creators in places that are undergoing a process of institutionalization. Here, in the cabaret or the bar, musical and music-theatrical action spaces can be prototypically tested and experimentally developed before transitioning into institutionalized routines. These locations, focal points of social and cultural activity, are referred to in this work as "Hot Spots." Social and acoustic spaces, (re)orders, and the repertoire serve as the starting point for a study that follows the career of pianist and composer Mischa Spoliansky through the Berlin of the Weimar Republic.
