The introduction is designed as a workbook for students and educators. It provides guidance for critically engaging with the history of intercultural education on one hand, and with the concepts of intercultural education and teaching developed since the 1960s on the other. The presentation of the history of intercultural education does not begin in the 1960s, but includes the 19th and early 20th centuries, focusing on the handling of the 'foreign' and the 'own' in educational policy and pedagogy. This makes it clear in which tradition intercultural pedagogy as a field of study, as well as the currently applicable educational policy and legal regulations for various immigrant groups, are situated. One chapter is specifically dedicated to terminological questions and other issues that arise when exploring the topic.
