The role of women in Islam is currently under strong criticism. Islam appears to be misogynistic and poorly aligned with the European image of women. To discuss the status, rights, and duties of women in Islam, Hamida Sarah Behr examines the publications of two experts on Sharia and Quranic interpretations in her master's thesis: legal scholar Abou El Fadl and Quran exegete Abu Zaid. Both scholars have worked to uncover methodologically unsound interpretations and to refute positions that devalue women and elevate men. This analysis of contemporary Quran commentaries and legal interpretations is key to understanding the current debates. It provides the reader with a nuanced perspective on the intra-Islamic discourse regarding women. Thus, this work is a valuable milestone.
