How and for what purpose is music history addressed in schools? And what music history can and should be taught in schools and music education? These questions intersect at the crossroads of music education and historical musicology. Exploring this interplay is by no means new, as the relationship between both disciplines significantly shapes their respective histories. However, the current question regarding the present relationship between music education and historical musicology is particularly relevant in the context of a pluralistically differentiated music culture. In this regard, fundamental questions of music historiography, the discussion of the concept of the work and the history of composition, the handling of musical diversity, media history, and music as sound appear to be significant, also from a music educational perspective.
