Albrecht Götze, a professor of Semitic languages and Oriental history, was appointed from Heidelberg to Marburg in 1930. At the end of 1933, he was dismissed from his position by the Nazi authorities due to his pacifist beliefs. The official dismissal letter bore the note "Case Gumbel." The nationwide wave of persecution against the political supporters of the Heidelberg university lecturer Emil J. Gumbel also affected Albrecht Götze. Gumbel, a prominent pacifist who had repeatedly documented the political murders of the Nazis and the role of the right-wing Weimar judiciary, had already been dismissed in 1932. This work sheds light on the background and process of the dismissal using extensive archival materials and biographical testimonies, providing insight into the political milieu of the university province during the Weimar period.
