Masematte, which emerged in the early 19th century, was the language of workers and itinerant traders, as well as of crooks and vagabonds in and around Münster. Traces of this special language can still be found in the spoken German of the Münster population today. The text book includes not only literary, historical, local historical, and fictional texts but also invitations, letters to the editor, and image texts in Masematte. The introduction provides a socio-historical and linguistic explanation of Masematte, featuring authentic old speakers. Remarks on the edition of the texts, sources, and bibliography enhance the book and allow for deeper insights.
