Product details

The "Lila Lied" (1920) is still sung today as a gay-lesbian anthem. The first "gay record" was a couplet by Otto Reutter: "And everyone gets a fright when Hirschfeld comes around the corner." Vinyl records were the first mass-produced product of the modern entertainment industry. Ralf Jörg Raber presents confident voices and texts that made the leap into this medium. He shows how clichés, mockery, and derision also spread there, and how gay individuals resorted to camouflage. Later, songwriters and pop music, lesbian bands, and gay formations conquered the terrain, and just recently, hip-hop has launched a homophobic counterattack. With great passion, Raber narrates the cultural history of homosexuality in the echo of the record and provides a treasure trove that explores even the most curious phenomena and categorizes them knowledgeably.
