When Paula Becker meets the significantly older Otto Modersohn in 1899, she is a young, ambitious artist determined to paint at all costs. He, on the other hand, is already well-established, one of the founders of the artist colony in Worpswede, and married. Despite these obstacles, the mutual attraction is undeniable, and a year later, the two become a couple. Even the first letters they exchange during Paula Becker's travels to Berlin and Paris reveal their deep affection for each other, as well as their profound connection in artistic creation. In the following years, their written correspondence frequently serves to discuss painting and articulate their artistic goals.
