Product details

Yodeling is an exceptional phenomenon among singing arts, a highly specialized form of singing. In the German-speaking world alone, there are many regional variations that have developed their own distinct characteristics. The Harz region stands out with its acrobatic motifs, which compete against each other year after year in yodeling competitions. "We don't sing, we are the yodelers" illustrates how different styles of yodeling have emerged even within the Harz region. The analysis takes into account the past 100 years of Harz music history: from the marginal phenomenon of yodeling at the beginning of the 20th century, through its establishment as a sonic trademark during the Nazi era, to the strong folklore movement after 1945 in both parts of Germany. This powerful development continues to influence practice to this day. This music ethnological study examines the scene of Harz yodelers.
