According to a study, in 2003, one in four women living in Germany reported having experienced physical or sexual violence, with 99% of the cases perpetrated by a man. Often, women are perceived as being oppressed by patriarchal structures and helplessly subjected to them. The patriarchy undoubtedly creates a breeding ground for violence against women. However, it is time to grant women a more active role, as they seem to (unconsciously) shape their 'victim role,' as evidenced particularly in the specific nature of female aggressive behavior. Awareness of their own contribution to this dynamic opens up new approaches for (abused) women and social work to actively and preventively counteract gender inequality and the associated readiness for violence against women.
