Overwhelming natural landscapes combined with a palpable spiritual atmosphere give West Tibet its uniqueness. This part of the Tibetan Plateau is considered the true "Land of the Gods," as it is home to Mount Kailash, the sacred mountain. For time immemorial, followers of four religious communities have revered the mountain as their holiest ideal center: Bön-po, Jains, Hindus, and Buddhists. Here has been, and still is, the place of the gods of Tibet and India. The first section of Part I of this volume is dedicated to Mount Kailash, showcasing it through images and text, with a particular focus on its historical and mythological significance. The reader then follows the Sutlej River westward, reaching the brightly shining world of the submerged prehistoric kingdom of Guge.
