The book "Well-being, Sustainability and Social Development" offers a comprehensive analysis of over two centuries of societal development, employing innovative historical and statistical approaches. It utilizes the well-being monitor developed by Statistics Netherlands, which is recognized by a significant portion of the international statistical community. The Netherlands serves as a case study, illustrating how, despite prosperity in 1850, extreme poverty and inequality posed significant challenges to well-being. By examining monitors from the years 1850, 1910, 1970, and 2015, changes in three dimensions of well-being are presented: quality of life in the here and now, in the future, and elsewhere. The analysis highlights solutions to extreme poverty and the emergence of new sustainability issues, particularly in ecological systems.
