Constructivist ideas and Buddhist teachings have more in common than is generally thought. Werner Vogd highlights those commonalities that radically differ from other philosophical or religious views. He does this based on three guiding thoughts: (1) The attempt to find oneself leads one astray. Ultimately, there is nothing to be found within us other than projections that obscure the fact that the self as an isolatable core does not exist. (2) Constructivism and Buddhism reject the claim to derive an absolute truth or explicit meaning from our experiences. Maturana and Varela speak of the futility of all biological forms, while Buddhist teachings repeatedly emphasize the essence and substance-less nature of all our sensory experiences. (3) However, an unexpected aspect reveals itself in the rationally intangible basis of our existence.
