The hundredth anniversary of the shots fired in Sarajevo in June 2014 will trigger a whole series of memorial events, exhibitions, official speeches, and publications across all media. This omnipresence of World War I is the best argument for addressing the topic more intensively in education. After all, students learn best when the subject matter seems subjectively significant to them. This booklet addresses World War I from its outbreak to the end of the war, with particular emphasis on everyday experiences at the front and on the home front. Numerous sources document the suffering and hardships that the first industrialized war brought to soldiers and civilians. Focus areas such as "The daily life of children and adolescents during the war" consistently relate back to the students' own experiences.
