People in our postmodern society often live under the expectation of being open and flexible: the consequences are fear of commitment or the illusion of complete independence. A lifelong commitment is hardly imaginable. However, this pastoral psychological reflection on life commitment in vows illuminates why it contributes to a richer life and how it can succeed. The fundamental attitudes of Gestalt therapy - presence, awareness, and responsibility - help to perceive reality as it is. They contribute to rooting oneself in life. In this way, they form the anthropological foundation for the evangelical counsels; in them, people of all times testify that they commit to a life with God in concrete reality. The dialogue between the theology of orders and Gestalt therapy helps to understand vows more deeply: when vows take shape, they connect us to life. As a primal human form of life commitment, they enrich not only religious individuals but also everyone who is searching for a fulfilling life.
