Wednesday, January 7, 2015: Two masked individuals storm into the office of the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo and shoot down a large portion of the editorial staff - in retaliation for Mohammed cartoons. In the following days, millions express their solidarity by saying "I am Charlie." The French sociologist Emmanuel Todd was not among these Charlies. His provocative conclusion: Under the guise of a struggle for freedom, democrats and anti-democrats have joined forces to demonstrate against Islam. It was not about freedom in general, but about the freedom to mock Islam. This thesis serves as the starting point for drawing a highly revealing map of the current political mentalities in France and Europe. Hatred of foreigners, skepticism towards Europe, authoritarian political ideas, admiration for Putin, criticism of Israel, and animosity towards America: these are the ingredients.
