Volume 4 of the Frankfurt Edition of the Works of James Joyce is presented in two parts. Part 1 contains essays, the play "Exiles," the prose sketch "Giacomo Joyce," and the so-called Epiphanies. Part 2 will include all poems and excerpts from "Finnegans Wake," the most lyrical prose in Joyce's work. The selection of essays - including essays, lectures, and reviews - covers the essentials. Alongside important early works such as "Drama and Life" (1900), "Ibsen's New Drama" (1900), and "The Day of the Mob" (1901), there are notes on aesthetics from Paris and Pola, the Trieste lectures on Irish culture and politics, on Blake and Defoe, and the Irish travel reports Joyce wrote in 1912 for the "Piccolo della Sera." "Exiles," the only play Joyce wrote, was created around 1914.
