Three masterful shorter prose pieces by Thomas Bernhard, written and published in quick succession, are collected in Volume 12 of his works. In them, the fundamental motifs of Bernhard's cosmos unfold in their own distinct forms. Discomfort revolves around the complex of origin. An Austrian living abroad, heir to great estates, wishes to free himself from them immediately through a gift. Also in "Watten." In a posthumous work first published in 1969, the narrator comes into wealth through an unexpected inheritance, and he too donates the money to a lawyer and mathematician: he accepts it but requests that the narrator send him notes on recent observations. Thus, psychological fine observations arise in connection with the titular card game. The prose "Gehen," published in 1971, not only circles around a central Bernhardian theme—namely, the relationship between walking and thinking—in constant movements of sentences, but also demonstrates his poetics of concept and storytelling in the most stringent form.
