Aby Warburg, a passionate image researcher and founder of iconology as an independent discipline, was considered by his contemporary Walter Benjamin to be the grand seigneur of scholarship. Today, there is hardly a field of art studies that has not been significantly shaped by him, and hardly a cultural science debate that does not receive crucial impulses from his writings. Warburg transcends disciplinary boundaries and develops a particular interest in figures of transition, inversion, and conversion, which he uses as seismographs of his own era. However, the potential for understanding in his writings has not even begun to be fully realized, which may be due to his pronounced specialization, but more so to the fact that many important texts are not accessible or are only available in smoothed editions. This volume therefore offers Warburg's most important texts in a careful manner.
