Walter Benjamin's intensive engagement with translation began in 1915 with his first work on the poems of Charles Baudelaire and continued with his famous reflections on "The Task of the Translator," which he prefaced to his translation of Baudelaire's Tableaux Parisiens in 1923. Later, he added prose translations—among others, of Proust, Balzac, and Aragon—along with ongoing theoretical reflections on the subject. Benjamin even expressed the ambition to be recognized as a translator. Volume 7 of the complete works is dedicated to the Tableaux Parisiens, as well as all drafts and versions of his Baudelaire translations and all subsequent theoretical notes on translation.
