When the Sex Pistols launched the song "No Future" in 1977 in reference to the Queen's silver jubilee, giving a name to the punk ethos, no one would have thought that the Queen would still be alive to celebrate her platinum jubilee in 2022. The future, even that of the British royal family, cannot be so easily dismissed.

The 1970s are described by Philipp Felsch in his book "The Long Summer of Theory" as "the decade that lost faith in the future." This sentiment intensified in the 1980s, when the atmosphere was already dystopian. Fears were focused on "environment" and "nuclear threats," while today the major prefix of fear is "climate," with activists calling themselves "Last Generation." The spring focus on the wasp's nest questions the ambiguous slogan of "No Future," which encompasses dystopia, hopelessness, decadence, but also rebellion, radical critique, and daring, and – at least in the 1980s – irony. What has changed in the fears, the apocalyptic outlook, and especially the attitude toward the future? As uncertainty in itself, the future is both a curse and a blessing. What would it mean to live without a future?.
