The danger to thinking today does not lie in its suppression, but in its dissolution. For nothing is more threatening than the power of indifference. The power that stands in opposition to thinking is a reality in authoritarian societies, while in our societies the boundary between power and thinking has collapsed. This has not led to a reconciliation with a power that thinks, but to the emptiness of both: to a situation of quotation marks, to a thinking power that is neither power nor thinking, to what Jean Baudrillard refers to as simulation. Using the example of the legal clerkship, the author describes the literal realization of the principle of simulation: the nonsense produced by such a thinking power on one hand, and the compulsion to understand the emptiness of thinking as a successful reconciliation of difference on the other. An everyday power relationship is thus created.
