What Duchamp Abandoned for the Waterfall
German, 2009Product details
Marcel Duchamp spent five weeks in Switzerland in 1946, including five days at the Hotel Bellevue near Chexbres, high above Lake Geneva and overlooking one of the most beautiful landscapes in Switzerland. The nearby waterfall Le Forestay, cascading down through the rocky vineyards of Lavaux, inspired the Dadaist to create his last major masterpiece, "Étant donnés: 1. La chute d'eau, 2. Le gaz d'éclairage." The artist photographed the waterfall and made it the starting point for his enigmatic installation, which has been housed at the Philadelphia Museum of Art since 1969. Caroline Bachmann and Stefan Banz have now identified the spot where Duchamp once stood and reversed the perspective: they spent several years photographing the breathtaking view that Duchamp had turned his back on. The artist book features one hundred color images from this work in progress.
