The most important sources about the fascination with the Hitler movement were published in the USA in 1938, but have not yet appeared in Germany. Theodore Abel (born 1896), an American sociologist of Polish descent, announced a competition in 1934 in coordination with NS propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels, offering 18 prizes ranging from 125 to 10 Reichsmarks. "The purpose of the competition is to collect material about the history of National Socialism, so that the American public can inform themselves through real, personal stories." Family background and educational paths are to be described, as well as the journey to National Socialism. Literary quality is not important, but there is a clear exclusion criterion: anyone who lies will be disqualified. The reports must be honest and trustworthy. A total of 683 submissions were received. This book gathers them.
