With the availability of powerful digital cameras, computing technology, and open-source software, image-based 3D modeling is no longer limited to photogrammetry specialists but is making its way into the entire geo, construction, and planning sectors – from replicas of statues to the reconstruction of buildings. This book is written from a user perspective and explains the application of current techniques using examples from architecture, heritage conservation, and museum objects. It documents 3D modeling with digital cameras and PCs and describes both the capture techniques and the use of current freeware and open-source programs for creating virtual and real 3D objects. Additionally, it provides background knowledge with an introduction to the Python programming language and the OpenCV computer vision library.
