They serve a positive function in the treatment process, acting as a form of coping and providing insights into the structural level and quality of the therapeutic relationship. However, resistance and defense mechanisms can also serve as a warning signal for the therapist when they significantly restrict the patient's life. Early defense formations such as splitting, projection, and projective identification pose a particular challenge for therapeutic work.
