In Germany, at least one in five births is medically induced, with about one in three of these inductions occurring due to overdue pregnancy. The aim of induction is to prevent the death, disability, or illness of the child. However, an analysis of over five million birth records does not confirm that the rate of stillbirths or severe birth complications increases after the due date has passed. Routine induction of labor in healthy pregnant women expecting a healthy child likely does not belong to the measures that prevent stillbirth. This book is aimed at midwives, doctors, and women seeking well-founded support for shared decision-making regarding the induction of labor. For the first time in Germany, it provides an analysis of the relevant data and an evaluation of available decision-making aids.
