Product details
The study addresses ancient conceptions of the language of God from philosophical, linguistic, and theological perspectives. It demonstrates in the first main part that the anthropomorphic conception of God present in Homer and characteristic of Greek-Roman antiquity corresponds to a divine idiom that is typologically indistinguishable from human language. However, Greek philosophers, in line with their sublimated conception of God, also conceive of a non-phonetic spiritual language for God. The second main part discusses the world-creating speech of the biblical God and its Hellenistic influence through the philosophical theology of early Christian thinkers. The concluding section presents the discourse on God as a subject of dogmatic debates in the early Church.
