The question often arises about how one could become a party member in the NSDAP or a member of one of its branches (SA, SS, etc.) at that time and what such membership entailed. It has become clear that there is a lack of solid knowledge on this topic so far. Therefore, the publisher Wolfgang Benz has commissioned a team of relevantly researching historians to provide corresponding information. The nine contributions in this volume reliably inform about the NSDAP, its branches and affiliated associations, the functional elites of the NSDAP from block leaders to gauleiters, membership development, the opening of the party and membership bans, as well as the so-called March Fallen. The mental structures of the NSDAP between arbitrariness and obedience are described, along with the procedures by which members of the HJ were admitted to the NSDAP.
