Product details

The 9th district of Vienna is often referred to as Schubertgrund after its famous son. In 1850, Alsergrund united suburbs that could not have been more different: on one hand, the urban Alservorstadt and Rossau, and on the other hand, the so-called more rural areas, including Michelbeuern, Himmelpfort, Thurygrund, Lichtental, and Althangrund. It was only generations later that the differences began to blur. Alfred Wolf, a native of Alsergrund, served as curator and director of the local museum for 33 years since its founding, working on a voluntary basis. From his extensive private collection, he selected around 200 mostly unpublished photographs from the period between 1860 and 1980. These images primarily depict everyday life in the district, the working world, leisure activities, community life, and both public and private celebrations. Thus, the photo book opens a window into the past.
