In the second part of his family novel, the "Viennese Triptych," the surviving members of the Glickstein, Strecha, and Bielohlawek families gather again in Vienna in 1945. Wickerl has returned from the concentration camp, Turl is getting involved with the union, and Caroline Glickstein is fighting from exile for the return of her father's former property. Old Strecha once again feels cheated out of the fruits of his supposed labor, while old Bielohlawek is entrusted with managing the brewery. Finally, Fini and Fanny manage to navigate the daily lives of the families even under the most adverse circumstances. As in the first volume, the fictional Hernalser Bräu serves as the small world in which the larger one holds its trial. With sensitivity and great empathy, Pittler depicts the lives and struggles, the anxieties and hopes, the confidence and despair of three Viennese families.
