Located just outside the gates of Vienna, the Vienna Woods is an ancient cultural landscape that has been inhabited since at least the Neolithic period. However, the geological history of this diverse landscape dates back much further. In this elaborately designed and completely revised third edition, the geological structure as well as the geological, paleogeographical, and plate tectonic development of this northeasternmost part of the Alps are precisely described based on outcrops and illustrated through 42 excursions. Following an introduction to the geology of the region, the development of the Eastern Alps is outlined using colorful paleogeographical maps. This is followed by a description of the tectonic building units and their rock sequences, illustrated with colorful geological overview maps and stratigraphic column images.
