"Europe, do not forget your martyrs!" (John Paul II.) was the theme of a scientific conference organized by the PRO ORIENTE Foundation, which examined the significance and importance of martyrdom against the backdrop of the Christian-Jewish heritage. Representatives from the four major Christian traditions (Orthodox, Catholics, Oriental Christians, and Protestants) and a rabbi representing Judaism expressed the interfaith and confessional power of martyrdom. The fact that today, Christians of various denominations around the world suffer persecution and death for their faith highlights the relevance of this often-forgotten topic. Unlike Christian martyrs, Jews, especially during the Holocaust, were condemned to destruction from birth and name, without any choice of escape. The Vienna conference exemplifies what a theological declaration called for in 1993: "The churches must collectively express their recognition and respect for all those, known or unknown, bishops, priests, or believers, whether Orthodox, Eastern or Latin Catholics, or Protestants, who have suffered, professed their faith, and testified to their loyalty to the Church and the faith it proclaims.".
