Even as a high school student, Heinz Ludwig Arnold reached out to Ernst Jünger in writing. Shortly thereafter, he seeks advice in Wilflingen on whether he should serve in the military in the then still young Bundeswehr. The response letter, written by Greta Jünger on behalf of her husband, is not surprising in its tendency. This initiates a correspondence that soon leads to Arnold's employment as a "secretary." This position provides insights into Jünger’s standing in the literary scene of the Federal Republic, his attitude towards emigrants, and his views on politics in Germany, Europe, and the world. Over the years, the perspective of the literary critic and magazine editor evolves, becoming critical of the "warrior, forest wanderer, and anarchist," only to eventually draw closer to Jünger again in the latter years of his life. Alongside the significant memoir essay of the author, who passed away on November 1, 2011.
