Product details

Little is known about Wilhelm Werner (1898-1940), who grew up in Nordheim am Main, was diagnosed with 'idiocy' in 1919 and admitted to the psychiatric institution in Werneck, and was sent from there to the euthanasia facility in Pirna/Sonnenstein in 1940. Unique documents from his hand have survived, consisting of 44 drawings from a notebook created between 1934 and 1938, which address his forced sterilization. Since their first exhibition at the Heidelberg Prinzhorn Collection in 2010, they have moved and amazed many people. Drawings by inmates from the time of National Socialism are extremely rare, and as reactions from an affected individual to the prescribed surgical procedure, Werner's sheets are unique. The figurative representations astonish with imaginative invention and original form language. The volume presents.
