The center of the Austrian railway network was and still is Vienna. Here, the main lines originate. Peter Wegenstein documents in this book the development of the Vienna railway network, its beginnings, heyday, and changes. It all started in 1837 with the first trains on the Northern Railway. Shortly thereafter, the Southern, Eastern, and finally the Western Railway, Franz-Josefs Railway, and Northwestern Railway were added. The development was completed with the Aspang Railway, the local railway to Baden, and the Pressburg Railway in 1914. The ongoing changes to the track network, such as the construction of the city railway, the marshalling yards, and the main train station in Vienna, are another topic of the book. The author also highlights the construction history of the major Vienna train stations: North, South, East, West, Northwestern, Franz-Josefs, and Aspang stations, up to the recently opened main station.
