Product details

As a surveyor in railway construction, Karl – the autobiographical wish-fulfillment of the author – finds himself in the Wild West. He encounters conflicts with white ruffians and the local Native Americans. Thanks to his ability to knock out opponents with his bare fists, he earns the honorary name Old Shatterhand. His nobility in battles with the Indians ultimately leads to a friendship with Winnetou, the young chief of the Apaches. Winnetou embodies all the positive traits of an "Indian hero" and has become a symbol of the "noble savage." The friendship between the two main characters follows the ideal of mutual education and enlightenment. Karl May presents an idealized example of successful intercultural understanding through Winnetou and Shatterhand – a theme that remains relevant today. The novel captivates not only with its consistently thrilling plot, rooted in the fact that several individual stories are combined, but also with the enduring popularity of the material, as evidenced by the classic film adaptations from the 1960s and the film parody "Der Schuh des Manitu." An appendix with an afterword, a timeline of the life and work, and notes by Ralf Schönbach, an educator and member of the Karl May Society, completes the volume.
