In the winter of 1945, the storm of war swept over the borders of the German eastern provinces, driving millions of people westward. When the land route was cut off, the only escape left was across the Baltic Sea. Millions fled on foot, with horses and wagons, by train or ship over ice and water. Among the refugees were the peasant woman Lisa Kretschmann from Schippenbeil with her children and the widow Levine Gedeitis from Memel with her daughter Olga. But also thousands of Jewish women, who had worked as concentration camp prisoners in East Prussian camps on the expansion of airfields, were not to be freed by the opponents of the war and therefore had to die in a horrific manner. The book follows four young Jewish women from the Lodz ghetto on their journey to Auschwitz, to the Stutthof concentration camp, and from there to the East Prussian subcamps.
