The introduction to German linguistics is aimed at students of German studies, particularly beginners. The goal of the book is to introduce the most important questions, concepts, methods, and findings of German linguistics. The guidelines are based on the university and state examination regulations of the subject, as well as overarching educational goals in the field of language and language culture. The book covers the structures of phonetics and orthography, as well as the levels of words, sentences, and texts. The presentation focuses on contemporary language, but also addresses earlier stages of the German language and language change. It discusses the geographical, social, and professional differentiations of the German language, as well as the application of linguistics in dictionaries and language consulting.
